If you have a video card of intel and you have hardy, then you know the driver is 2.2.2. So what? The fact is that after this it left two other versions, 2.3, and recently, 2.4.0.
Especially this latest version brings with it new Mouth-watering offer, including support for the new chipset graphic series 4 (including the x4500 igp), performance improved, especially with regard to the exa, a lot of bug fixes, and more.

If you want the complete changelog, look here the official announcement.
After several experiments are able to make perfectly stable and run (so I hope) the deb package of new drivers for video cards of intel for ubuntu hardy heron, both in i386 release that amd64 (for the series work for you).
As always found the package in my repository, or if you prefer, you can download it directly from here: if you ubuntu 32bit download the package deb 386, if you have 64-bit, download the one for amd64 (so it is logical, but no one knows ever).
Of course if you find something wrong and/or found bugs, write below.
I want to thank particularly Hotteterre which is provided to me by giving feedback fast and precise, without him would not the new drivers.

I tried it on 8.04 i386, with defalut 2.2.1 I get 1450-1500FPS in glxgears and everything is smooth, with 2.4.0 I get about 900FPS and everything chokes, propably to properly use 2.4.0 we will also need updated Mesa, DRM, newest xorg server beta and so. so propably we will se working 2.4.0 (or even 2.5.0 at that time) Intel driver on 8.10.
My hardware was Q6600 + 965G (x3000).
Regards
vermaden
using hardys intel driver video playback on my mythtv media center was choppy/laggy using greedy option etc… using 2.4 everything looks quite smooth right now
(intel 915GM chipset, intel gma 950 gfx)
even tvout works kind of (b&w issue gone for PAL TVs)
even you can adjust the picture now with xrandr!
now i have color! but it flickers a lot so it remains unusable

Thanks, been using this for a few weeks now, and all is fine.
Any chance seeing 2.4.1 in your PPA soon?
I’m using the 2.4.0 driver and it fixed the crashing display problem with my Thinkpad SL400. That uses the new 4500 chipset. I’m running 64 bit version of ubuntu 8.04. Only issue is that mplayer complains that there’s no xv capable driver, and I have to use -vo x11 or -vo sdl right now.
Thanks a million for this, it makes my laptop usable! woohoo!
I couldn’t get the display to work on my Sony VGN-FW170J ( intel 4500 chipset ) with kubuntu 8.04 amd64.
After a fresh install of kubuntu 8.04, X server failed to start, the only thing I got was a blank screen.
I downloaded the amd64 package, apt-get removed xserver-xorg-video-i810, then dpkg -i the downloaded 2.4 amd64 package, and rebooted.
Now X starts after login, but the display is very corrupted. The wait cursor is repeated like 2000 times all around the screen .. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but It didn’t help.
any hints?
No sorry, but intrepid has intel driver 2.4.1, so wait some weeks
yeah I meant 2.4.1, but doesn’t it support the 4500HD chipset?
I would like to support intrepid.
I run ubuntu 8.04 on thinkpad x200, which has GMA 4500. The new driver solved the problem of black screen and no response when video is played, but now the desktop effects do not work. Anyone else encountered the same problem?
è uscita la versione 2.5 che corregge numerosi problemi con le schede HD4500, qualcuno ha voglia di creare i pacchetti per ubuntu intrepid (i386 e soprattutto amd64) ?
trovati:

“No sorry, but intrepid has intel driver 2.4.1, so wait some weeks
” i don’t know about this, but i really have some problems with the graphics. i only have 300+ fps when doing glxgears and btw 3D doesn’t work at all
and i AM running 8.10…
e i pacchetti dei driver 2.5.0 per hardy qualcuno li ha trovati?
Apparently the cause of the white screen issue has been found, the following comment was just posted to bug.freedesktop.org. I didn’t have the chance to test the patch myself, but apparently the bug is resolved:

Good news everyone: I have picture!
Posting this using the intel driver working fine on my laptop display…
The ‘blank display’ to me looks like the panel isn’t active (the slow
white-to-clouds change that happens when you leave it on for more than a couple
of seconds looks like charge leaking from the display elements).
After reading more docs, and staring at the register dumps even more and
getting nowhere, I decided it might be a good idea to enable the OUTREG
debugging in the driver and looking at the log…
After doing that, I saw that there were multiple calls to
i830SetLVDSPanelPower() changing PP_CONTROL from 1 to 0 and back (display on
and off) during xorg startup…
That stroke me as a little silly, so I decided to add a ‘if (!on) return;’ to
the beginning of that function (in i830_lvds.c), recompiled and copied the
driver and woa and behold: I saw the kde login prompt.
My xorg crashed soon after that though (signal 11), but that may have been the
result of combining the default ubuntu xorg server with the latest git intel
driver (and/or that whole libdrm stuff)…
So I tried the same patch to the ubuntu intrepid source package (for which
Xorg.0.log says ‘module version 2.4.1′), and it works too, without segfaults…
Whee…
Jesse, am I right in assuming that’s enough info for you or other xorg devs to
get this working for everyone els?
Hello webmaster
I would like to share with you a link to your site

Just got done checking the ubuntu forums after having the same problems with you guys and found out that Ubuntu is working on the current problem. After seeing many people post about the Vaio VGN-FW170J and the video card problems with the intel chipset they decided to do something about it and are now working on the new Version of ubuntu, Jaunty Alpha 6, and the beta version is working for one of the coders which also has the VGN-FW170J. He said that this summer is the testing period and will be out with it soon after. For those interested in the beta version, it comes out April 27. So everyone that has this chipset cross your fingers.
